It is too Jon that Robb owes the discovery of his faithful companion, Grey Wind. The direwolf was part of a litter of six that he discovered in the snow as the brothers returned from an execution. Whilst Eddard and his companions commanded the boys to leave the pups where they lay, Snow had been able to convince his father that their meeting had been one of fate. The direwolf sigil of the house of Stark and the parties discovery of the litter was no mere coincidence, Jon’s ability to comprehend the signs and convince his father to spare the pups was something that Robb would be eternally grateful to him for.
The discovery of the wolves was shortly followed by the king's arrival at Winterfell. Whilst Robert Baratheon set about convincing his father to take up the office of Hand of the King, Robb found himself coming to grips with the young crown prince Joffrey. There was no way that Robb could have known then that Joffrey would become his sworn enemy later in life, but even on the practice yard that day Robb knew he had no love for the boy whom he believed he would on day swear fealty. The bad blood that developed was not a mere matter of hurt pride, though Robb was indeed deeply humiliated when Ser Rodrick forbade him to duel with Joffrey using steel rather than childrens wooden practice swords. The mockery and chagrin directed at him hurt his pride, yet there was something unnerving about the joy that the crown prince took in Robb’s humiliation. In hindsight he should have seen then what he knew now. Joffrey was not fit to take the iron throne, his claim me have descended from hereditary right but Joffrey did not possess the traits needed to rule in a just and honourable manner.
When Eddard was named Hand of the King and left the North to travel south to King's Landing, Robb remained in Winterfell to rule in his father's stead with the help of his mother. After the attempt on his brother’s life and his mothers departure South the responsibility fell solely upon his shoulders. He had to grow up fast and though Maester Luwin did his best to provide Robb sound counsel the decisions were his too bear. It was Robbs decision to call the Stark bannermen to war after his father’s arrest reached Winterfell and it was Robbs decision to march against the Lannisters after their invasion of Riverrun. He was duty bound to support his mother's house, House Tully, though the ultimate goal of his actions was of course to free his father Eddard Stark.
Though by no means a seasoned military strategist, Robb’s decision to split his army and engage the Lannisters on two fronts gained him the respect of both his bannermen and his mother, who up until this point had been unable to see Robb for the lord which he had become. Under the command of Roose Bolton the majority of Robb’s footmen engaged Tywin Lannisters army on the kingsroad, acting as a smokescreen shielding Robb’s movements across the Green Fork at the Twins with the majority of his cavalry. The price of the ploy was political, a marriage between house Stark and Frey, the daughter of his choosing being completed upon the successful dethronement of Joffrey.
To date the ambush and annihilation of Jaime Lannister's army in the Whispering Wood outside Riverrun is his greatest military victory. In addition to lifting the siege of Riverrun his force took the Kingslayer, Tywin’s son Jaime, captive, though to his dismay Jaime, ever the serpent slipped from his grasp whilst being transported North. Upon his Lord Father's execution at the command of King Joffrey all possibilities of a peace between Stark and Lannister were dashed. Whilst Joffrey sits atop the iron throne in the South, Robb has laid claim to the lands of the North, styling himself the King of the North at the behest of his bannermen. From Winterfell he directs his rebellion and after his victory over the Kingslayer at Riverrun it would seem the young wolf is winning…
Character Personality
Robb is a young man who has had to grow a great deal in the past year. For the good of his family he undertook the duties required of the lord of Winterfell when his father and his mother left for Kings landing and had it not been for Eddards tuition in his younger years he would have most certainly been unable to cope. Whilst Robb still has childish moments where he is unable to control his feelings, for the most part he is a reserved, thoughtful and intelligent individual. He emulates his father with many of his qualities, he listens before he speaks and he inspires men with his compassionate, honourable nature.
He is capable of love, as is any man in Robbs eyes and the love that he shares for his family is undeniable. Robb would gladly put his brothers and sisters needs before his own, though the death of his father has hardened the young man. Whilst there was a time he would flinch at the thought of spilling blood the art of killing is slowly becoming second nature to him. He understands the real meaning of war, capable of looking beyond the stories of glory and honour that his sister Sansa would recite for him in their youth. Robb has heard the cries of pain that emanate from men when they are cut down, seen the light leave their eyes as their souls slip over to the after-life leaving behind a cold rotting carcass as their stain upon the world. Robb is not above inflicting misery and pain upon his enemies and the longer this battle between North and South rages the tougher the inner struggle to cur his resentment of the Southern houses and their lands becomes.
Yet he holds on to his father’s honourable ways, this sense of honour however has the potentially to be his downfall, like it was his fathers. After his victory at Riverrun he refused to listen to advice that he should kill Jaime Lannister on the grounds that executing a prisoner of war after battle was not something that his father would have done. With the Kingslayers escape and his likely return to the fields of battle in due course Robb has questioned the logic behind his decision, yet his desire to emulate his father outweighs any potential consequences his actions could yield. If he is to win this war he wishes to do so in a manner that his father would be proud of. This war is as much a war between honour and dishonour as much as it is a war between North and South to Robb. He likes to see himself as an honourable commander whilst Joffrey encapsulates all that his father despised and fought against.

Reclining in his chair Robb closed his eyes for a moment, he had hoped to find solace in the darkness yet as his lids closed all he could see before him were the maps he had been pouring over all day. Where were they to strike next? Riverrun had been liberated, now it fell upon Robb and his men to push their advantage but where? Lord Karstack had been intent upon attacking the lions den head on, the joint forces of Robb and his cavalry and the remnants of his footmen under Roose Bolton should march to Harrenhal at once, slay Tywin Lannister then turn upon Casterly Rock. The Greatjohn, ever the warrior, agreed yet there was something in their manner that screamed danger to Robb. His mother had warned him about the folly of letting your bravery overrule your reason and at this early stage in the war, one wrong move and the credibility that Robb Stark had managed to forge with his victory at Riverrun would be gone. Sighing he opened his eyes as he pondered alone. What was it his father had always said? The best plan was the one that your enemy least expected. Robb then needed to do the unexpected, Tywin Lannister was no fool, he was a seasoned commander who would expect a swift counter attack, the Lannisters would be prepared for Robb should he heed the Greatjohn and Lord Karkand’s advice. The young lord cursed aloud as his eyes once more fell upon that accursed piece of parchment…
Robb had been unsure of what to do with Jaime Lannister when he had him in captivity, some had argued the kingslayers use as a bargaining chip and others had petitioned Robb to kill him where he stood. Executing Jaime had been Robb’s first thought, indeed his only thought when he had sought out the man from his vantage point in the Whispering Woods. A life for a life he had told himself, the Kingslayer for his father, then perhaps the Lannisters would know the pain that he felt within his breast every time he thought about his Lord father, or saw the grief on his mothers face so bravely hidden behind a smile. Yet, when it came down to doing the deed, Robb found that he was unable to issue the command. Despise the Lannisters as he did it was not the Kingslayer that had killed Eddard, Joffrey had had that honour and it was a crime for which only Joffrey could pay in full. His father had been ruled by his morals all his life and he would be remembered in the North as a great man for his deeds, Robb would not disgrace his father by stooping to the cowardly act of executing prisoners of war.
So what then was Robb's to do with the troublesome lion? He had deliberated over that very question for nigh on two days before reaching a conclusion. The Kingslayer was to be sent North as part of a caravan headed for Winterfell, Robb would use Jaime for his own ends when the time was right. Yet he had not arrived and if the letter was to be believed the reason for his absence was that he had wriggled free of his bonds and escaped a few days ride from his destination. The repercussions of the escape had been fumed over most of the evening, Jaime would return to the battle no doubt and though many had triumphantly argued that they would simply have to catch him again, Robb was unsure whether such a thing was possible. Catching a lion alive once had been tough, releasing him back into the wild and catching him again would be tougher. He had been foolish to believe that he could cage the lion that was Jaime Lannister and it as a mistake he would have to ensure he never made again.
Running his left hand through his thick auburn hair Robb let out a long yawn. One glance out of the window of the room in which he sat would tell him that it was most definitely time for rest. The moon hung high in the night sky and when it disappeared over the horizon Robb Stark knew he would have to come to a decision on what to do next. As he rose from his seat and headed towards his bed chamber only one question remained to be solved. What would Tywin Lannister least expect the young wolf to do next?
