House History: House Blackfyre was founded by Daemon Blackfyre, the bastard-son of Aegon IV after he was legitimized by his dying father. Daemon inversed the Targaryen arms for his coat of arms and named the house after the sword Blackfyre that his father gave him when he was fourteen. The sword had been the personal weapon of the first Targaryen king Aegon I and all his successors. Among the traits passed on to the Blackfyres by the Targaryens were the platinum blond hair, violet eyes and the premonition-like dream ability.
In 195 AL Daemon and his friends and allies revolted against Daeron II, his half-brother, using the old rumor that Daeron was the son of Aemon the Dragonknight instead of Aegon IV and that the gift of the ancestral weapon Blackfyre proved that Aegon wanted Daemon to succeed him.
Ultimately the rebellion failed and Daemon and his two eldest sons perished on the Redgrass field. His surviving sons fled to the Free Cities with a number of supporters. The Second Blackfyre Rebellion took place in 212 AL. It never spread beyond the walls of Whitewalls, but several key Blackfyre supporters were killed. The remaining sons and their descendants attacked the Seven Kingdoms a number of times.
The last attack was in 257 AL when Maelys the Monstruous joined forces with a number of ambitious men and invaded the Stepstones as a base for a future invasion of the Seven Kingdoms. Aegon V sent an army that defeated the rebels. Maelys the Monstruous was killed in single combat by Ser Barristan Selmy.
Indeed, most believe that the Blackfyre line ended with Maelys the Montrous when he was cut down by Ser Barristan Selmy. However, this is not so. Haegon Blackfyre, Daemon Blackfyre's son was married to a Tyroshi noblewoman when he was seventeen years of age. Haegon himself served with his uncle Bittersteel in the Golden Company until he was thirty years old when he broke off with a small fleet of ships bound for the ruins of Valyria. They settled an island west of the ruins of the old city, starting a small colony along one of the in-land bays. Here House Blackfyre and its supporters flourished, their small group growing to the size of three thousand.
To increase their wealth, members of the colony began expeditions to old Valyria, often bringing back relics and books. As they studied more and more, they uncovered the secret to forging Valyrian steel swords though every attempt failed due to the lack of magic in the world. Still, the gold and gems they found in the ruins and the other cities were more than enough to swell their coffers.
As a way to ensure the loyalty of the Golden Company, House Blackfyre always has one son that takes up the company's banners. The sons are always begin their service at age 15 and allowed to retire when they reach the age of thirty, much like Haegon Blackfyre. Thus, the Golden Company will always rally to House Blackfyre, both for historical reasons as well as their current blood pact with the house. However, since Maelys the Monstrous, the Blackfyres have not called upon the sellswords and have been content to live in their city, hidden away from the world.
