Tywin Lannister, the first son of Tytos Lannister, was born at Casterly Rock. Throughout his early life, he watched as father very nearly ruined their powerful and noble House. Tytos Lannister was much too gentle; his bannermen openly mocked him and did what theyp leased with no repurcussions. Tywin learned what power truly meant when his father arrested his most disloyal bannerman, Lord Tarbeck, but caved into the demands of his wife when she captured and threatended to harm three Lannisters. As a result how the bannermen laughed at his father, Tywin never laughed himself.
When he came to power as Lord of Casterly Rock, he was the exact opposite of his father. The reputation of House Lannister was low, Tywin changed this by completely destroying House Tarbeck and House Reyne for their defiance of his father. Tywin later forced his fathers mistress to walk the streets of Lannisport naked, telling everyone she was a thief, when he discovered her trying on his deceased mothers clothing. Tywin soon married his cousin Joanna Lannister, the marriage was a happy one.
At the age of twenty, Tywin was made King Aerys Targaryen's hand. Tywin proved to be a great Hand of the King and held the position for twenty years of peace. King Aerys grew jealous of Tywin as the people Westeros said it was the King's Hand who ruled over them and not the King himself. Aerys took Tywin's son, Jaime, for his Kingsguard and refused to marry Cersei, Tywin's daughter, to Prince Rhaegar. Having been robbed of his heir, whom he realised Aerys would use as a hostage against him, Tywin resigned his postion as Hand and returned to Casterly Rock.
Having given him twins, Jaime and Cersei, Tywin's wife, Joanna, later died giving birth to his third child, Tyrion, and because of this Tywin never loved Tyrion. Some people said that when Joanna died, a part of Tywin died with her and from that day on the Lord of Casterly Rock never smiled again.
When Robert Baratheon rebelled against King Aerys Targaryen, Tywin did not take a side in the war until it was clear the rebels where going to win. Lannister men arrived at the Red Keep and convinced the men there that where on the side of the King, once inside they slaughtered everyone within. Gregor Clegane and Amory Lorch, Knights sword to Tywin and under his orders, killed Princess Elia of Dorne, Rhaegar Targaryen's wife, and their infant children. His daughter was married to Robert, the new King.
When his son Tyrion, who he didn't really care about, was captured by Catelyn Stark and taken to the Eyrie, Tywin took it as an insult to his family and their honour. He sent Gregor Clegane and his men, disguised as brigands, to pillage the Riverlands. This is one of acts that caused the War of Five Kings. Tywin's forced went on to take most of the Riverlands, leading to war against Catelyn Stark's son, Robb Stark, and his armies from the North. Tywin lost Riverrun to the Northerners and his son Jaime was captured.
Tywin's grandson, Joffrey, became King and named his grandfather as his hand. Tywin, who was commanding his forces in the war against the North and the Riverlands, sent Tyrion in his stead, ordering him to prepare King Landing's defences in anticipation of an attack from Renly or Stannis Baratheon, both of whom had laid claim to the Iron Throne of Westeros.
Now, due to the lose of Riverrun, Tywin has marched to Harrenhal and is planning his next move.
Character Personality
Tywin Lannister is an intelligent but arrogant man. He is also loyal to his family and to his house, both of which he cares about greatly. Tywin loves his first two children, Jaime and Cersei, and his grandchildren, Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen, but loathes Tyrion, whom he blames for the death of his beloved wife. Tywin is not a happy person, he has not laughed since childhood and has not smiled since his wife died. He is a respected, esteemed and ruthless leader; songs have been written about how Tywin crushed those bannerman who had disrespected his father.

Sample Roleplay
( From another forum, on which I play Lancel Lannister )
Lancel had just finished making love to Cersei. It was a pleasure he had indulged in often since he had helped her orchestrate the death of her husband and Jaime had been captured by the Starks. He understood the risk of what they where doing, Lancel knew that if Jaime was released or rescued from the Starks and found out about their affair, he was as good as dead. He knew he had to be careful, that day Cersei had assured him that everyone of importance at King's Landing was busy. The Council had a meeting to attend and Joffrey was busy with his kingly duties, although he didn't do very much, really. After their love making session, Lancel intended to leave her bedchambers quickly in order to avoid being seen by anyone. As he made his way to the door, he was confident that no one would see him leave, no one ever had before.
Lancel opened the door, doing the last few buttons on his shirt as he did. It took him a second to notice Tyrion but he did he was more afraid than he had ever been in his life. If he found out what had been going on within Cersei's bedchambers he would most certainly tell Jaime given the chance. Lancel was shocked but overjoyed when Tyrion simply nodded to him and walked on by. His joy soon faded back to fear and panic, the Imp had stopped at the end of the hallway, turned back and did not look very pleased. The dwarf spoke sternly to him, "Cousin, walk with me". Lancel remained silent and still for a moment but then decided it would be best to speak and follow "Y-Yes, Ofcourse".
Lancel followed Tyrion until they reached an empty room. He knew what was coming and he was scared, scared for the first time since Robert Baratheon had died. The Imp, whom Lancel had never been very fond of, held the door to the room open, waited for him to enter and then closed it behind him. Tyrion spun to face him and began to speak, "Tell me.. why were you in Cersei's bedchamber? Remember, lying to the Hand of the King is a crime! I'll have your head on a pike if I find out you lied to me!". He may have been a small man but Tyrion was extremely intimidating, especially when he was threatening to have someone beheaded, which Lancel knew he could do very easily.
Unable to think of a good excuse for being the Queen's bedchambers, Lancel decided to come out with the truth rather than have Tyrion find out later and have him killed for his lies, he began to stutter "S-since just after J-Jaime's capture, the Q-Queen and I have sleeping together." Lancel couldn't help the stuttering, he was afraid.
