The banners had been called by Robb Stark, Son of the warden in the North. Castellan of Winterfell. For the second time in over 20 years, the North was moving to war. When the raven had come forth bearing the message that they were to come and rescue their liege lord, Eddard Stark. Lord of Winterfell and Warden in the North. Iain remembered Eddard Stark as he last saw him when he had rode forth to give him his loyalty as the new Lord of Wolf Hill. He had been somber as he always was and after, Iain had left his old friends behind at Winterfell to resume the hard duties of being a Lord.
In turn, Iain called forward the lesser banners of the North that were sworn to him. House Toyler, House Noveober, House Lyster. Houses like that allied to the red wolf. Three Thousand men. 1,000 were horse men on their shaggy little garrons and the rest were archers, swordsmen, axe men, Pike men. They had joined their host at Winterfell with the rest which numbered up to 15,000 men combined. Insufficient compared to the armies of the Westerlands.
Then, they had ridden south to Moat Cailin and had met with Lady Catelyn Stark and Ser Rodrik Cassel. It was a long and hard march and when they reached the Twin’s, It was there that they were denied. The Frey's were treacherous and it took longer to get there. “Expect nothing of Walder Frey and you will not be disappointed.” The Greatjon Umber had mentioned to Iain. It was then that 1,000 parted with Lord Bolton, Lord Cerwyn, Ser Manderly and Lord Glover. These were the men that were going to fight Tywin Lannister. If only their chances of survival were not so bleak. 1,000 men against 20,000? No. Most of them would die or be captured in return.
The Blackfish Tully and his archers began to shoot down the Lannister’s ravens and Outriders that were sent to scout the army. They were soon joined by Lord Mallisers men and Lord Malliser himself. They heard that Ser Marq Piper was harrying the Lannister’s baggage train and when he joined with Robb. They continued the practice. It was a miracle so far that they had not been scouted as of yet.
Then word reached them of Edmure Tully who had foolishly fought against Jaime Lannister and lost. When they got near Riverun they had found out that Jaime Lannister had split his army into Three Different camps. Which was slightly foolish, yet necessary. This gave the Northerners a chance to win, the Western Lord’s a chance to lose.
Iain had been unable to sleep all night. Questions raced about his mind as fast as arrows released from bows. Would he survive? Would he be brought back in a coffin? What if they were captured. The questions were a lot of optimistic ones and then Iain found himself thinking of Nash Lyyden and his band of outlaws. Would he be in the battle? Iain would not be forced to kill his old friend. Even though Nash would probably disarm him and kill him quite easily. When the sound came for him to muster for battle. He got up and dressed slowly. Fearing it might be his last few hours on earth. He took everything slowly. Putting on his steel armor. Wrapping Wolfspaw around his waist. Once, he faltered and found himself trying to hold back the tears. The battle anxiety was getting to him. He thought with a smile when he suddenly got sick.
He saddled his horse and looked around him as the Domhnail men and banner men clustered around him. He had yet to prove himself as a lord to them and even more a battle commander. “I hope to see you all after the battle..Althought I know that may not happen. Even so, I was a quarter of you to go with Lord Karstark and another Qaurter to go with the Mormont’s and Umbers. The rest of you will stay with me.” They all nodded and as one, they drew their swords. Iain felt compelled and drew Wolfspaw from it’s sheath and raised it in the air. The others followed and in the voices of the North, they muttered “Harder then Winter” The words of House Domhnail.
Iain rode up beside Torhenn Karstark as Robb walked back and forth in front of the army. Grey Wind followed him dutifully. “A fine day for battle.” Patrek muttered as Iain moved his horse beside him. “Aye, But how many will survive?” Iain replied and Patrek grunted in reply and laced on his Helm. Iain looked up and saw Robb turn his Grey Stallion. Iain laced on his own helm, which had a snarling wolf embossed on the top of it. He could barely see or hear anything inside the Helm and even then, he could still hear the sounds of galloping hoofs. Brynden Tully and his men had entered the Lion’s den. There was the familiar snick of arrows as Jaime Lannister rode out to meet them. It was now or never.
As the outriders galloped after Brynden Tully, they also galloped into the trap of Karstark. There was the sound of steel on steel and horses screaming in pain and other sounds that were horrible to hear. They heard the clash of steel on steel. There was the sound of another horn and it was time for them to go. They galloped down into the forestry and they fought like never before. Iain lost sight of Patrek Malliser and as he galloped towards the Lannisters, he urged his horse on and his horse collided with another, almost throwing him out of the saddle. The lannister was caught off guard aswell and Iain took the chance to stab him through the chest with his lance. The body fell before Iain could manage to pull it free. By then, another opponent rushed at Iain. Iain managed to draw his dagger and block the sword swing, even though it resulted in his dagger shattering. Before the other could react, Iain jabbed the broken remains of his dagger into his opponents face, through the slits. It must have been the luck of the gods that he had.
Iain turned in his saddle and drew wolfspaw as he saw Jaime Lannister gallop at Robb, Undefended and on foot, surrounded by the two Karstarks and Hornwood. Iain kicked his horse forwards and felt the great powerful muscles bunch underneath and explode in massive power. His horse was gallop wildly and Iain was sawing on the reins to get him to stop. It was not for bad though as he galloped past Robb, an arrow punched into the side of his horse and Iain was thrown from the saddle.
He saw stars and for a strange reason, he still clutched Wolfspaw. Daryn Hornwood was above him, ripping his helm free and Iain was glad it was him he saw. Daryn smiled at him and helped him to his feet. Only for a second as Jaime Lannister’s gilded sword sliced his face open. Iain rushed forwards to take revenge but he was dragged back by the tide of battle. A spear stabbed at him and Iain caught it on his shield. The spear was embedded and Iain slashed, ripping open the mans helmed face with Valyrian Steel. Iain fought as hard as he could. That was until a cheer went up from the Northmen. Most of the host was destroyed and the rest was fleeing. Robb was a horse again. Calling out commands.
When he saw Iain he flicked his head at a nearby war horse. It was A southern horse by the looks of it and Iain leapt into the saddle without hesitation. Lining himself up beside Robb, he realized they had captured Jaime Lannister. Together, they rode into the front of Riverun and broke apart the Siege. Iain was kept a horse this time, even though they were horribly outnumbered. There was at least 15,000 men against Robb’s rough 5,000 and although it helped that the camp’s were divided into three. It looked like they were lost.
Iain found himself holding a torch in his right hand, Wolfspaw in his left which was holding the reins as they galloped down hill to attack the camps. The only battle Iain concentrated on was the one where he was charging. As they galloped into the camp, they found screaming horses and running men as they fell beneath the North’s powerful steeds. As Iain passed a tent, he threw the torch onto it, setting it on fire. He could tell from the screams that there were occupants inside. The Greatjon was firing the siege engines and from the east, he heard sounds of battle. He did not remember Robb sending men there, But the thought was wiped from his mind as he was forced to dispatch a man swinging at him with an ax.
They were soon joined by the River lords and when the battle was finished. It was revealed that the Lannisters on the east had been attacked by a Tyroshi sellsword who had switched banners. It explained as to why there was fighting there.
Later, Iain was one of the first to Proclaim Robb King In The North. The start of a new Era.
