House Traits: Many Lyddens have been known to be as withdrawn and insular as the beast on their coat of arms. It is also possible to find a large number of Maesters in their family tree, many of which have come to forge their Valyrian steel link.
House History: It is currently believed that House Lydden was created through the marriage of Lyd the Soothsayer, an Andal warrior of some renown, with Ida, the daughter of a chieftain of the First Men. Few records remain from that age, but it is, however, known that they have remained silently loyal to the former Kings of the Rock even during the time when Tytos Lannister faced growing troubles from his vassals, which allowed them to be left in peace during the pacification started by his son, Tywin. During that time, a number of men in their family have chosen to marry maidens from other areas of Westeros after several of the firstborn and their heirs either proved to be unsound of mind or chose to live out their days as maesters of the Citadel.
In the time of Robert's Rebellion, the Lyddens have kept their neutrality much as their liege lords chose to, Lord Lewys and a small group of his knights joining the Lannister army during the Sack of King's Landing to help drive the final nail in the Targaryen dynasty's coffin and support Robert Baratheon as he ascended to the throne. Of that group, none were particularly distinguished by their deeds of arms.
To support the new king, a battalion of Lydden soldiers, lead by Ser Nash Lydden, Lord Lewys' heir, was part of the army that helped quell Balon Greyjoy's rebellion. The men distinguished themselves during the Battle of Pyke, when they manned the upper right flank, which was precisely where the ironborn attacked when the King's men breached the citadel's defences and a desperate counteroffensive measure was launched to try to cut the flow of new royal troops inside the Pyke. They were able to repel the first few waves, albeit not without a number of losses, before receiving support from part of the nucleus of Stark troops placed around the main axis of their assault. A song, called "If You're Dead, Why Won't You Die?", has been penned in their honour, although its popularity has waned in time due to the fact that it cannot be performed in any sort of polite company. The few bards who still know and sing it claim that the sauciest parts were uttered by the Lydden commander himself and subsequently paraphrased by his men in their presence, although none of them has shown any proof in that regard.
The Lydden estate has grown steadily during the past few years due to their recent involvement in martial tournaments and commerce. They have sent men to bolster the ranks of Lord Tywin Lannister's army after the death of King Robert Baratheon and the events that sparked the War of the Five Kings, while Ser Nash Lydden remains in the capital, ready to defend it against the enemies of the realm.
