House History: It was formed in 283 Al after the War of the Usurper when the new king, Robert I, named his younger brother, Stannis, Prince of Dragonstone. Stannis took the title as a slight, since he would have preferred the richer lands of Storm's End, the ancestral Baratheon castle, but Robert wanted a strong leader in the old seat of House Targaryen. Around 287, Lord Stannis took Selyse Florent to wife. During the Greyjoy Rebellion of 289, Stannis, as Robert's Master of Ships, led the Baratheon fleets to victory in the Battle of Fair Isle. Since then Stannis and Selyse have conceived their daughter, Shireen, although their marriage remains loveless.
Stannis was the first to suspect that Queen Cersei's children were not also Robert's. While investigating the matter with the Hand of the King, Lord Jon Arryn, Stannis agreed to foster Jon's son, Robin, on Dragonstone. Neither this nor the moment of revealing the information to Robert came, however: Lord Arryn was poisoned and Stannis retreated to Dragonstone to call his banners. Before he could return to King's Landing, Robert too was dead, and the realm poised for war. Sending letters throughout the realm, Stannis proclaimed himself the rightful king over the queen's baseborn abominations. Although the poor lands of Dragonstone allowed for little support for his claim, the religion and magic of Melisandre of Asshai has given focus to Stannis' cause and several Baratheon bannermen have joined him in time, some even choosing to convert to the faith of the Lord of Light.
