Character History: ----
Maldon Ryswell, the younger brother of Lord Rodrik Ryswell, grew up knowing that he would inherit no titles or lands from his father. He knew that, if he wanted to make something of himself in the world, he would have to work hard for it.
Like most young boys, Maldon wanted nothing more than to become a knight. He was aware that being knighted would be easier for him than it would be for most as he was the son of the lord.
From the age of 10, Maldon began to work on the things he thought where important for knighthood but he found himself lacking in most of them; he could not ride very well, he wasn't very good with a lance and his shot with a bow was absolute atrocious. Luckily for Maldon, he had one redeeming feature; his natural ability with a sword.
As he was struggling with almost everything else he tried to do, Maldon dedicated much of his spare time to practicing with his blade. By the time he reached his teenage years, he was incredibly skilled with a sword for a boy of his age. One of his father's closest friends, a knight by the name of Ser Jon Hunter, took note of this skill and requested that the boy become his squire; this request was granted.
Ser Jon worked Maldon hard. On top of all of the usual duties of a squire, he made the boy learn to read, write, ride and, most importantly, work on his swordplay daily. As Maldon grew older, his ability with a sword increased, mostly due to the fact he was becoming taller and stronger. At the age of seventeen, Maldon was knighted by Ser Jon.
Most of Maldon's time as a knight, serving his father, was incredibly uneventful. He did, however, make a name for himself fighting in melees and eventually became well-known as one of the finest swordsmen in the Rills. Maldon also fought outside of the Rills and, despite being a skilled with his blade, was often outshone by more famous knights. Not long after Maldon reached his thirtieth nameday, in the year 276, his father passed away and his elder brother succeeded him as Lord of the Rills.
Maldon served his brother, to whom he had never been, loyally for six years. In the year 282, Robert Baratheon, Jon Arryn and Eddard Stark rebelled against the Targaryen king; Aerys II, known as the Mad King. As House Ryswell was sword to House Stark, Maldon's brother made the decision to support the rebellion rather than remain loyal to the king.
Throughout the course of the war, which became known as Robert's Rebellion, Maldon made a name for himself and became known as a fine knight and swordsman. He fought in several battles and killed quite a few well known supporters of House Targaryen. Fortunately enough for Maldon, his brother had made a good choice in deciding to rebel against the king; the rebellion was successful.
As his reputation as a skilled swordsman had grown immensely during the war, Maldon was offered a place in the Kingsguard of the newly-crowned King Robert Baratheon. Despite considering this a great honour, Maldon decided to politely turn down the offer; all he really wanted was to return to the North, to his home in the Rills.
Upon his return home, Maldon was welcomed like a hero by the people of the Rills. He became more loved and respected by the smallfolk than his elder brother, Lord Rodrik, had ever been. This caused friction between the two, the Lord that had always considered himself better than his young brother was now immensely jealous of him. Rodrik removed Maldon from his service, cast him out of his castle and ordered him to leave the Rills; despite being unhappy about this, the knight was too loyal to question his brother's decision.
Maldon decided that the natural choice would be set out as a hedge knight to find employment. It was not hard for one with a reputation as good as his to find well paying service with other lords but all he truly wanted was a new home; something impossible to find.
Maldon traveled all across the Seven Kingdoms over the years, working for many lords, ladies and traders along the way. With no battles to be fought and no new glory to be won, many people forgot the once famous name, 'Ser Maldon Ryswell'.
Now aged 53 and well past his prime, Maldon has returned to the Rills in hopes that his brother has gotten over the jealously he felt years before. If he is not accepted by Rodrik, he does not know what he will do with himself.
Character Personality: ----
In his youth, Maldon Ryswell was considered a fine knight. He was well known for his intelligence, his bravery and his loyalty to his house. Now that he has grown older and is well past his fighting peak, Maldon no longer considers him as brave as he once was but does believe he has grown more intelligent. He tends to avoid conflict as much as possible.
His loyalty, which he once considered a positive a trait, is now something he hates. Being so loyal to his brother and obeying him when ordered to leave the Rills cost Maldon his life. Despite feeling this way, he cannot help his loyalty; following orders and serving lords has been a large part of his life and feels incredibly natural to him.
Throughout the entirity of his life Maldon has been an incredibly optimistic person. He always felt as though he could achieve anything, if he put his mind to it and tried his absolute best . In battle, he always believed himself to be better than his adversaries and he often was. Even when Maldon was cast out of the Rills by his brother, he always knew, deep down, that he would return one day.
You could consider him a good man. He is kind to those that deserve and is not to those that don't. Maldon strong opposes breakers of the law and feels that, as a knight, it is his duty to stop them when possible. He only uses violence to do when it was necessary and generally tries to avoid being drawn into physical conflict when it can be easily avoided.
Maldon, even when he was young, famous and had many admirers, has never shown much in way of emotion. He prefers to keep his emotions to himself rather than share them with other people. Even when he has feelings for someone, by they positive or negative, he tends not to tell them how he feels.
Maldon has never married and has fathered no children. When he was a younger man always felt that being a knight was more important than finding a woman and starting a family but, now that he is older, his attitude to has changed. If Maldon is allowed to return to the Rills, he hopes to start a family there and raise a son; he basically has a strong desire to pass on everything he knows to someone who can put it to better than use than he can, now that he is old.

Maldon Ryswell was ready to return home. It had been almost twenty years since he had last set foot in the Rills but the time had come to finally ask his brother to allow him to return to his position as one of his loyal knights. Maldon had never loved Rodrik quite so much as he had loved their father but he has always been loyal to him, despite having being unfairly cast out of the Rills.
Rodrik's reason for ordering Maldon to leave was simple; he was jealous of the fame that his younger brother had accumulated whilst fighting against Targaryen forces during Robert's Rebellion. There no doubting that the smallfolk of the Rills had loved Maldon much more than they had loved their lord but now that the once great knight had grown into an old man, he hoped that his elder brother's jealously would have faded away over the years.
He knew exactly what he would do when he arrived at his brother's castle; he would throw himself before his brother and beg for forgiveness. In reality, Maldon had done nothing wrong but he knew that if he was going to convince Rodrik to allow him to return to the Rills he would need to act as though he was incredibly sorry about something. If Rodrik decided to let him return, it would be the single greatest day of his life but, on the other hand, if his brother turned him away, it would break him.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A cold wind was blowing as Maldon rode North, towards his home, causing him to pull his cloak tighter and lower his head. His horse was large and strong, it would carry him for quite a while longer before it tired it out. Maldon was not travelling quickly, he had never been much of a rider and falling from his horse would set him back quite a bit on his journey to the Rills. He was hoping to arrive there within a day or so.
A man appeared before him on the road, seemingly from nowhere. There was thick forestation on either side of Maldon, he assumed the man had come from there. Out on the roads at night, bandits and robbers where a common thing but the vast majority of them where not skilled with their weapons and a knight, even an old one like Maldon, could deal with them easily.
"You there, why do you block my path?", Maldon called, from atop his steed.
"I block your path on account of this bein' our road. You have to pay if want to go further," the man said, reaching for his sword. Once he had drawn it, three more men stepped from the shadows of the trees on to the road. Each of them had a blade, each of which was of poor quality.
"Ah, so, you plan to rob me?"
"That's about right," one of the bandits responded.
Maldon climbed down from his horse, loosened his cloak and tossed it to the ground beside him. It was cold but a cloak blowing around him in the wind would only hinder him in a fight. Once the cloak was gone, his sword was clearly visable; it was the same sword he has carried since the age of thirty, it had served him well for many years and won him many battles.
Without a word of warning, Maldon drew the sword and advanced slowly towards the men who planned to them. They where much younger and much too confident in their own ability; one of them towards Maldon, spinning his sword around in the air as though he was some kind of accomplished swordsman. The knight took one step towards the bandit, swung his sword upwards from the ground and severed his arm. Before his arm and sword had even hit the ground, Maldon had taken his head too.
The other two bandits advanced together, angry over the death of their friends but also aware, now, of how good their target was with his blade. One of them attempted to slash Maldon but had his attack easily parried, the second swung wildly and missed the knight completely. The wild swinger was the first to fall; he was off balance after his attack and Maldon was easily able to thrust his sword sword into stomach. He withdrew his blade from the mans gut and turned it quickly on to his friend, slashing across his chest and leaving him with a deep, fatal, gash.
"I think you'll know better than to try to rob people in the future."
The bandit with the gash was alive but would not be for long. He had a few minutes left in the world.
"You best pray for forgiveness now."
Maldon sheathed his sword, pick up his cloak and remounted his house. The attempted robbery had been but a minor set back and he could still hope to arrive at the Rills by the next day.
