True to his Umber heritage, Jon Umber is a very large man, towering over most people at the height of almost seven feet. While he's maybe not the tallest man in Westeros, he certainly is among them and in the north he is perhaps only rivaled by his own son and heir, whom ironically is known as Smalljon. Furthermore, he is a man of enormous strength and his body is almost entirely covered in muscles, although age has inevitably started affecting him. There are few people who can rival him in the strength department. That, along with his great size has made him an extremely intimidating person to encounter, especially as a foe on the battlefield, earning him the nickname 'the Greatjon'.
His hair color is dark, but has started to go gray with age. He keeps his hair cut short and his beard well trimmed. His eyes are dark brown and he often looks around in a piercing, rather intimidating manner. His glance alone could frighten anyone on the battlefield and market square alike.
The clothing style of Greatjon usually consists of a mixture of leather and fur, as a protection from the extremely cold temperature of his lands, who are in the far north, just south of the wall. When he prepares for battle, he puts on either a combination of chainmail and platemail or simply a chainmail, depending on his mood. In battle, he wields a massive greatsword, which Bran Stark describes as the "biggest, ugliest greatsword" he has ever seen.
Character's Goals
Defeat the Lannisters
Secure the North from all threats, southern and northern alike
See King Robb Stark recognized as the King in the North
See Joffrey Baratheon and others responsible for Lord Eddard Stark's death beheaded
Character History thus far
Born as the eldest son of the head of House Umber and Lord of Last Hearth, Jon was raised as a true Umber. Tall, strong, fierce and proud. As his father's heir, Jon received all the traditional education and training that the Lords of the North receive during their upbringing. From an early age it became clear that Jon was going to be a large and strong man and he quickly found him self being much bigger and stronger than his peers. As a teenager he had become so large that he was nicknamed 'the Greatjon,' a nickname he has been known by for most of his life.
He has been fighting for most of his life, and he has been "making corpses out of men for thirty years" as he puts it him self. As his home is the northernmost in the realm, it is constantly repelling wildling raids. During one such raid, his own cousin was carried away, earning him much hatred for the wildlings beyond the wall.
Some time as a young man, he met and fell in love with a woman named Alanah. She eventually became his wife and they had a few children together, including his heir, Jon Umber. To distinguish between them, the son was nicknamed "Smalljon." A nickname that has ironically stuck to him ever since, even though he eventually grew to be even taller than his father the Greatjon.
By the outbreak of Robert's Rebellion, he had succeeded his father as the Lord of Last Hearth. Answering the his liege lord's call to arms, he led the soldiers of House Umber into battle, earning him much reputation as one of the greatest warriors of the North. A couple of years later, he answered Lord Stark's call to arms again during the Greyjoy rebellion, this time taking his eldest son along.
Since then, he has lived a relatively simple life, raising children and protecting his lands from the wildlings by either fighting off raids or even sending reinforcements to the wall. That is, until now. When Lord Eddard Stark was taken prisoner and thrown into the dungeons of King Joffrey Baratheon. Summoned by Robb Stark, he rode south with his bannermen to Winterfell. He disagreed with the young Stark almost instantly, threatening to take his men and march them home if he wasn't made the leader of the Vanguard, stating that "the wall would melt before an Umber marches behind a Glover." When Robb Stark called him an oath breaker, he snapped and grabbed his sword. Before he could draw it, he was attacked by Robb's direwolf, loosing two fingers in the process. After realizing that the young Stark was tougher than he thought, he laughed about the whole thing.
Following the encounter, he became one of Robb Stark's most fiercely loyal and trusted vassal. When the news of Eddard Stark's death reached the Northern army, he rallied and led the Northerners and Riverlanders in proclaiming Robb Stark "the King in the North," becoming the very first person to swear fealty to him as King. He now continues to serve him loyally, as one of his greatest champions.
Character Personality
Proud, boisterous and fierce, Greatjon Umber is in most aspects an ideal role model for the aspiring warriors of the North. His unmatched physical strength, bravery, cunning tactical mind, ability to lead troops into battle as well as his experience make him a dangerous enemy and an valuable ally. On the battlefield he firmly believes that it's his job to be in the first line of attack, leading the army's vanguard.
How ever, a true Umber, he is also headstrong and stubborn, often reacting to things that don't go the way he wants with great anger. His social life is stormy and he is frequently at odds with even with his allies. He may react to various things by going berserk and breaking things. When it comes to the matters of the North, he's extremely patriotic and fiercely loyal to the House of Stark. He respects no one, regardless of status, unless they prove them selves to him.
Family Members or Important People
Hoarfrost Umber, grandfather
Mors "Crowfood" Umber, uncle
Hother "Whoresbane" Umber, uncle
Alanah Umber, wife
Jon "Smalljon" Umber, son and heir
According to the ASOIF wiki : "Jon is mentioned as having "sons and brothers" with him when he answers Robb's calling of the banners." So I assume that he actually has more siblings and children than are mentioned, so I wouldn't have a problem with it if anyone wanted to play an semi-canon Umber.
Sample Roleplay (At least 200 words please) He couldn't remember who the lad was. He knew he was one of Glover's bannermen. Or was he with the Karstarks? He didn't care. All he knew and cared about was that he had insulted him, somehow. They were celebrating their victory against the Targaryens and the next thing he could remember was when he was in a brawl with these men. He couldn't even remember who threw the first punch. Maybe it was him, he was slightly intoxicated after all, but it was probably the other guy. Greatjon Umber shook his head and looked back up. This had been a very hard hit he received when someone smashed a chair on the side of his head. Slowly coming to his senses he suddenly realized that five men were holding him while the lad he had brawled with was being dragged away in a semi-conscious state.
Perhaps he wasn't slightly intoxicated. Looked like he had punched the man harder than he intended to. Good thing that they were holding him, he probably would've killed the poor lad. Regardless, he was alive so there was no reason not to continue drinking and celebrating. Even though the man's friends looked like they were ready to start round two. "Ey! Let me go! I'm calm you bastards!" he shouted and the men slowly started letting go of him, albeit reluctantly. No more than a few moments had passed after he sat down and raised his mug, that another punch struck him in his chin. The Greatjon exploded with rage, grabbing the edge of the table and throwing it to the side before throwing him self at them again with a mighty roar.
How did you find us? I can't remember honestly, but it was through an ad somewhere while I was looking for a good site.
