New Members Guide
Let me be the first to welcome you to Winter Is Coming. If you’re reading this then you’re likely entertaining the idea of sticking around and becoming a member, or you’ve already decided to do so; in that case, brilliant! This thread is designed to take you through all the relevant information on site systems, recommendations and everything you’ll need to know when considering joining the site, all in an easy to read, step-by-step detailed guide.
This will be updated regularly, as new information is added to the site, so if things are missing then please be patient. I hope it's helpful!
1) Your first decision when joining the site, if you haven’t made it already, is whether or not you want to be a Canon or Custom Character. If you’re considering a Canon, then you should check out our Wanted Canons and our Canon list (coming soon), to better see who’s wanted and who’s available for you to potentially be. If you wish to be a Custom Character, then you’ve got free reign to be creative with the lore of the TV show/books! Our information Reference Links thread may be helpful to you.
2) Next you may wish to check out the Role-play & Plot Guidelines for all information on our In Character guidelines, as well as plot and timeline information. If you want to be brought up to date on anything that’s happened plot wise since the site has started (which may vary from what you’ve read in the books or seen on the TV show) then you should check out our Events in a World of Ice & Fire thread (this section will be updated as and when new content is uploaded).
3) With all that done, you’re now ready to complete a Joining Application! It’s a simple form, so it shouldn’t take long for you to fill out. When you have completed it then post it here and a member of staff will look at it for you, where they will either approve it or suggest changes that may need to be made. An approval of a potential application should take no more than a day or so for a member of staff to look at, and that’s a guarantee from us. After this, you’re now officially a member, so welcome!
4) Now that your character is created, it's time to create your House (if it has not been done already). Both Canon Houses and Custom Houses can be created, and Custom Characters can be linked to Canon Houses if you so wish. To request a House please go here and fill out the form, posting it up for the staff to look over and approve. This is by no means mandatory, if you do not wish for your character to be associated to a House.
5. At this point you may wish to create your character their own personal Character Biography. In your Character Biography you are able to put any information relating to your character that you see fit, customising it in whatever way you like. An example that may help you get an idea of what you can potentially do is Jon Snows Biography.
6) Now that you’re accepted and ready to go, you’ll want your character to start growing towards becoming a Legend of Westeros! There are a few ways to go about this, each has their advantages, give their own rewards, and differ greatly from each other. Everything you will want to know in this area can be found within our PRPs, Quests and Grading information thread. To gain the rewards from your hard work, you will need to post in the Grade My Roleplay thread.
7) The rewards you gain from your RPs, Quests and Battles will go directly towards your own Character Level, which will go towards your House Level (if you're affiliated). All information on Character/House Levels can be found here. The better your Character and and their House Levels become, the more Items, Quests, etc. will become available to them. However, to improve your Character Level, and the linked House Level, you will need to claim your rewards, so you should check out our Update Template information thread.
8) Most of all, and potentially the most important thing for not just new members, but any member to the site; remember to have fun!
That’s pretty much everything you need to know to get yourself started on the path to becoming a Legend! Of course, there’s a lot more to the site than just those 8 points, but most of it will fall into place as you continue as a member. If you’re unsure on anything, need more information, or have any questions at all, then feel free to ask a member of staff or even bring them up in the cbox, another member may be able to help you!
